Interim Community Development Director

The Town of Essex has an immediate opening for an interim Community Development Director. The position will provide leadership and management to a department involving a dynamic blend of planning and zoning, conservation, economic development, and more. Ongoing projects include a town center planning project and subsequent update of regulations; housing; energy; and more. The director works closely with other departments, including Public Works, Fire, Police, Parks & Recreation, Assessing, the Manager's Office, and the Village of Essex Junction Community Development Department.

The director oversees three staff people: a planner, a zoning administrator, and an administrative assistant. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of municipal land use planning and development, and be collaborative, computer literate, and have a commitment to serving the public.

The position is being advertised as interim because the Town of Essex is exploring a potential merger with the Village of Essex Junction. Voters are expected to decide whether or not to merge in November 2020, at which point the Town and Village can better plan for the future of the Community Development departments in each municipality. The interim director is expected to participate in aligning policies and procedures with the Village of Essex Junction Community Development Department.

The interim role is expected to last 12 to 24 months. The regular schedule could range from 20 to 40 hours per week, depending on the needs of the preferred candidate and the Town. The chosen candidate will be expected to have regular office hours during the municipality's normal business hours, as well as availability to attend several night meetings a month.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience in community development or a related field, and at least two years of managerial experience.
