The Town of Peterborough, NH, a quintessential New England community nestled in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced planning professional, to join our highly qualified administrative staff and become part of “Our Town’s” future. Peterborough is located in the southwestern area of the state along NH Rt 101 and US Rt 202. Peterborough has a population of 6,500, is serviced by a regional hospital, active downtown shopping area, and a regional school district that includes 9 towns. Peterborough is fortunate to be called home for many vibrant art and cultural organizations; the MacDowell Colony, Mariposa Museum, Peterborough Players, and many more.
The Town is looking for a dedicated individual who has demonstrated abilities in handling multiple tasks and a diverse caseload to join our team. The selected candidate will primarily perform planning duties, support economic development in the Town. Specific responsibilities include: responding to planning, zoning and development questions; reviewing and analyzing development for compliance with all Town of Peterborough regulations; providing professional guidance and expertise to applicants, the public, decision-makers, land use boards, and offering solutions to planning issues; drafting zoning amendments and facilitating Master Plan updates; writing reports, performing research, and making presentations to decision-makers and stakeholders. The successful candidate will have experience managing staff and departmental activities, and will have supervisory responsibilities for employees including code enforcement/zoning administrator, assistant planner and administrative assistant/minutes taker.
Qualified candidates must have excellent communications skills (both oral and written), an ability to read and interpret plans, a sound knowledge of planning/design principles, development review, code enforcement, proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, ArcView GIS, and facilitation/ problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong customer service approach to problem solving and be able to perform in a value-based and team-oriented environment.
The salary for the Director of Planning and Community Development position is competitive and is comensurate with experience and education. The Town of Peterborough offers an excellent benefits and compensation package, including health/dental coverage, retirement, vacation, etc. Position requires: Duties require knowledge of planning and business/public administration equivalent to a Master’s Degree and 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent education and experience; training or experience in resource management, historic preservation and/or sustainable planning and/or AICP certification a plus.
