The Town of Madison is accepting applications for the position of Town Planner. This position is located in the Land Use Office of the Town. Minimum Training and Experience Required To Perform Essential Job Functions: Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Environmental Planning, Public Administration, Economics or a related field with Master’s-level coursework in the field—Master’s degree preferred—with five years of experience in municipal land use, planning and zoning, land use law and policy, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience with the use of geographic information system (GIS) software is preferred. Position requires certification as a Planner by the American Institute of Certified Planners and the possession of a valid driver’s license. *Candidates who have education and field work will be considered and required to obtain their ACIP within two (2) years from date of hire.

Position Purpose: The purpose of this position is to plan, coordinate and direct comprehensive planning, zoning, community development, and land conservation programs for the Town of Madison. Including the functional areas of land use, economic development, community development, housing, environmental protection, land conservation, transportation, historic preservation and related municipal planning and development areas. The work is performed under the direction of the First Selectman. Supervises Department staff; Plans, supervises and coordinates the review and updating of the Plan of Development. Prepares revisions to zoning, subdivision, and other land use regulations for consideration by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Appears for the Planning and Zoning Commission in legal cases, testifies to Commission actions, and coordinates the preparation of materials for presentation in court. Administers, coordinates and makes recommendations regarding land use regulations; compiles and analyzes data on economic, social and physical factors affecting land use.
Supports and directs the Environmental Planner and Zoning Enforcement Officer. The Environmental Planner will be a new position hired by the Town Planner and will allow the Planner the opportunity to begin building a team within the department.
Works with the Economic Development Coordinator and Commission on plans for development. Plays a major role in the Capital Improvement Plan for the Town along with Strategic development. Prepares and makes budget recommendations, administers approved department budgets and grants; prepares extensive grant applications to state and federal government. Coordinates planning and zoning review and actions with other Town Departments.
