The Town of Lenox is seeking qualified, intrinsically motivated candidates for the position of Land Use Director. The Lenox Land Use Department protects the quality of life of the residents of the Town
of Lenox and the natural environment through implementation and enforcement of the community’s
standards for land use management and development while identifying opportunities to incorporate best sustainability, housing and climate resilience practices into municipal activities and policies.

The Director participates in the design, construction and significant repair or improvement of present or future Town assets, including the built environment, open space and recreation resources.
The Land Use Director provides exemplary customer service to all stakeholders engaged in the process supported by the Department, including pre-application (conceptual) review, Conservation Commission procedures, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic District Commission, and/or Community Preservation Committee procedures, and the considerable day-to-day effort of responding to inquiries from applicants and/or their agents, abutters, interested parties, residents and other municipal departments. The Director conveys timely, accurate reports, explanations and recommendations to all involved in a professional manner.

The Director serves as the day-to-day Town Planner and Conservation Agent. The Director must foster open, welcoming environment for project proponents and opponents alike to bring material facts to bear as a project progresses from concept, to proposal, to construction. The Director position requires patience, courtesy and discretion. The Director refers interested parties to the provisions of relevant statutes, regulations, by-laws and policies that apply to the circumstances, and facilitates the formal processes of the Town by referring interested parties to forms, meeting schedules, advertising schedules, surety requirements, and any other information related to the matter at hand. The Director manages expectations and sets realistic goals for decision-making bodies for addressing proposals in a transparent, balanced, and efficient manner.

Lenox is located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The year-round population of 5,025 is
buttressed by a substantial number of weekend/seasonal residents and visitors, particularly in July and August. Widely known for its numerous cultural and recreational sites (notably Tanglewood,
Shakespeare & Company, Kennedy Park, Mass Audubon/Pleasant Valley), Lenox is also home to vibrant deep-rooted communities in villages located in its downtown, Lenox Dale, New Lenox as well as many smaller neighborhoods.
