Our team is seeking a Data Collection Intern to support transportation-related field work and planning activities. This unique position provides an opportunity to learn about transportation planning, traverse the Greater Manchester region, and work with a fun, knowledgeable, and collaborative team. No previous experience in fieldwork is required.

Responsibilities:
This position is primarily tasked with collecting transportation- and traffic-related data in the field to assist our transportation data collection program. Tasks include: 

  • Collecting traffic field data throughout the region, including traffic counts and infrastructure inventories. Traffic counting is two days per week, generally 7am to 3pm.
  • Inventorying road and sidewalk conditions using an iPad with the Arc-Collector app
  • Assisting Data Team staff with various tasks involving:
    • data Quality Assurance/Quality Control
    • maintaining data collection records in both digital and hardcopy forms
    • equipment inventories, maintenance, and supply orders
    • updating transportation planning documents
    • peparation of transportation planning reports, protocols, and other documentation

Candidate Qualifications:
The ideal applicant will be enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program studying planning, engineering, surveying, data management, GIS, environmental science, or other related fields.

Special requirements for this position:

  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; this position will include significant travel around the Greater Manchester region for fieldwork utilizing a company vehicle.
  • Data collection work involves working outside, typically starting early in the mornings, often in variable weather conditions, and requires the ability to lift at least 30 pounds and hammer masonry nails into the pavement at 15-20 locations per week.
  • Common sense and safety awareness are essential. 

Skills needed: 

  • Ability to work with a team and follow instructions, including safety protocols
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications
  • Ability to safely handle a variety of urban, suburban, and rural traffic conditions
  • Team-oriented, with a high degree of personal accountability

While not required, preferred skills include: 

  • Experience with field data collection and working outside
  • Experience with Arc Collector or other tablet-based field data collection programs
  • Experience with GPS technology
  • Working knowledge of planning and local government processes

The pay range is $17-$19/ hour depending on level of experience. Schedules will vary depending on availability but can range from 20-37.5 hours per week. The field season starts in mid-April and can last through mid-November. Exact start and end dates will be set to correspond with the selected candidate’s availability.
