Our team is seeking a Data Collection Intern to support transportation-related field work and planning activities. This unique position provides a chance to learn about transportation planning, traverse the Greater Manchester region, and to work with a fun, knowledgeable, and collaborative team. No experience in fieldwork is required. The pay range is $20 per hour. Schedules will vary based on availability but can range from 25-37.5 hours per week. The field season starts in early April and can last through early to mid-November. Exact intern start and end dates will be set to correspond with the selected candidate’s availability.
Responsibilities
This position will be primarily tasked with collecting transportation and traffic-related data in the field and assisting with management of our transportation data collection program. The intern will assist the Data Team with:
- Collecting traffic field data throughout the region, including traffic counts and infrastructure inventories.
- Traffic counting is two days per week (Monday-Tuesday), generally from 7am through 3 pm. NOTE: Hours can extend beyond 3:00 on days counting in the far reaches of the SNHPC region.
- Inventorying road and sidewalk conditions using an iPad with the Arc Collector app.
- Data quality assurance/quality control.
- Working with staff in maintaining data collection records in both digital and hard copy forms.
- Working with staff on equipment inventories, maintenance, and supply orders.
- Assisting staff with updating transportation planning documents, preparing planning reports, protocols, and other documentation.
Candidate Qualifications
Ideally, applicants will be enrolled in an associate or bachelor’s degree program studying planning, engineering, surveying, data management, GIS, environmental science, or other related fields. The ideal candidate will have the following skills:
- Ability to work with a team and follow instruction including safety protocols.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to safely handle a variety of urban, suburban, and rural traffic conditions.
- Team orientation and personal accountability.
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; this position will include significant travel around the Greater Manchester region for fieldwork utilizing a company vehicle.
- Data collection work involves working outside, typically starting early in the mornings, often in variable weather conditions, and requires the ability to lift at least 30 pounds.
- Common sense and safety awareness are very important
While not required, the following skill sets are a plus:
- Experience with field data collection and with working outside.
- Experience with Arc Collector or other tablet-based field data collection programs.
- Working knowledge of planning and local government processes.
